Petroleum Jelly - Paste Release Agent

To use as a release agent between silicones:

To use Petroleum Jelly as a release agent between silicones, you can combine it with White Spirit to create a thin, paintable wash that coats the silicone mould without filling in fine details. Because silicone bonds aggressively to other silicone, this mixture creates a reliable physical barrier that prevents them from fusing.

1. Ratios: For condensation-cure silicone, use a 1:1 ratio. For platinum or addition-cure silicone, use a 1:2 ratio. For highly intricate moulds, use a 1:2 ratio. In all cases, the ratio refers to Petroleum Jelly to White Spirit.
   
   
2. Apply a thin coat: Dip a soft, dry paintbrush or chip brush into the mixture. Lightly brush it over the entire cured silicone surface. Pay close attention to corners, seams, and undercuts.
   
   
3. Disrupt any pooling: Use the tips of the brush bristles to dab away any areas where the liquid is pooling. If the layer is too thick, it will blur the fine details of your mould.
   
   
4. Let the solvent evaporate: Wait roughly 10 to 15 minutes for the mineral spirits to completely flash off. You will be left with a microscopically thin, dull, uniform film of petroleum jelly on the silicone.
   
   
5. Pour the new silicone: Once the surface is dry to the touch and no longer smells strongly of solvent, slowly pour your new batch of liquid silicone over the prepared surface.

• Cure Inhibition: If you are using platinum-cure silicone, ensure the mineral spirits evaporate completely before pouring. Residual solvents or certain contaminants in low-grade spirits can occasionally inhibit the cure, leaving the new silicone sticky or gooey. Always run a small test patch first if you are unsure.
• Ventilation: Mineral spirits release strong, flammable fumes. Always mix and apply this solution in a well-ventilated area or outdoors, and wear nitrile gloves to protect your skin.
